Backpacking Reflections

Posted by Angus Nelson On October - 31 - 2008

backpack3.9 miles, uphill, at 42 degrees in the rain… this was our first day of backpacking in North Carolina this past weekend.  I can’t explain to you how uncomfortable the beginning of this trek really was.

However, the sun always comes out after the rain.

The next morning, a surreal haze of fog surrounded our campsite.  It was contentment at its finest as a campfire warmed our bodies and dried our clothes; water was boiled and hot breakfast served.  A new day had arrived.

We left for our next destination only to discover the magnitude of the beauty that surrounded us.  The sun burned off the clouds and the leaves of fall induced color exploded to embrace us.  Through the canopies of overgrowth to the distance hills rolling one after another, there was God’s glory in majestic form.

In the same like manner, our country has found itself in a fog.  The length of this process, the brutal schedules of our candidates and the never ceasing barrage of media attention has left us all in a haze of chaos.

In only a short few days, we will all finally discover who our next American leader will be.  Some people will cheer, others will be be disappointed, but in all, at least a conclusion will be made.

However, despite the winner, regardless of the political agenda, one thing is for sure:  The Son will come out after the rain.

Good Advice… Rest

Posted by Angus Nelson On October - 14 - 2008

fed reserveIrony finds Jimmy Carter admonishing the current administration for the current economic woes.  Though many of you probably don’t remember the mess this country was in during his own Presidency.

Stock prices nose-dive, news pundits panic, fears and anguish are abundant.  Then, all of a sudden, stocks soar to an all time jump and gas prices head the other direction in a plunge.

On top of all that, we’ve had Russian plow into Georgia – bad idea.  Russia backs out.  Will they try Ukraine?

Iran is building nukes and Israel’s seeking support to lob some bombs their research to a close.

Our election season is winding down, yet no clear winner.  One guy say this, another guy say that, promises made are guaranteed to be broken.  Furthermore, who really wants to step into those shoes with the world as it is?

It’s a crazy time we’re all a part of right now.  But panic is not going to solve anything.

Despite all of the chaos, however, there is a rest.  Outside of Wall Street, Main Street and Easy Street, there remains a promise from the One that owns the streets – we should not fear.  I think that good advice… application of “rest” is my choice to make, yours too.  Will you?
