Haiti Needs Help

After our two weeks in Haiti, it was overwhelming to witness the amount of need and destitution this area of the world lives under. More specifically, this is an island only 150 miles off our coast. How can it be that such an extraordinary land can be so beautiful and yet, contain so much lack.

Many will say that it’s due to Voodoo practices and their sworn allegiance to the devil, but I’m not convinced that’s the case. On a practical level, the government has done very little to educate, organize or facilitate any sort of community building, technology advancement or agricultural understanding. This island is the only culture that won it’s freedom as slaves to then rule the land. Therefore, I speculate that they’ve never truly known how to grow or govern a people group. Add to that the Haitian levels of pride and ego and you’ve got a hierarchy of rulers that aren’t will to ask or take instruction as to how to go about any of this.

If change is to come to Haiti, it will come from the people themselves.

No world government has interest in getting involved because there’s no self-interest. Far be it an altruistic nation to step in and assist in any sort of way to help.

On a spiritual level, what churches have done is to build more churches. Christians build buildings, but they don’t build people. A vacuum of knowledge, spiritual growth or maturity is present in a church body of no developed leadership. So missions groups send in teams to construct block and mortar when they could be conduction leadership development skills.

When will leaders decide to reproduce themselves – to mentor, train and develop the leaders of tomorrow?

For that matter, when will you decide to reproduce yourself – at your job, in your organization or in your legacy?
